RATING The international rating agency Standard & Poor’s is today announcing Romania’s rating, which is actually saying how safe the country is for foreign investors. This is going to be the third rating this year after those made by Fitch on July 31 and Moody’s on August 7. A good rating translates into lower interest rates, stability and lower pressure on the public budget. The decision comes in a period of major political deadlock: Romania has been without a government with full powers for almost five months now. The interim Finance Minister, Alexandru Nazare, has voiced optimism in terms of the country rating adding that he held extensive talks with financial experts. Nazare says that as compared to the deficit last year, the adjustment caused a reduction of 27 billion lei whereas investment has risen by 25 billion. We recall that Romania has the lowest investment rating BBB minus, while the three international agencies have maintained a negative outlook.

REPORT A US State Department report on Romania’s investment environment this year says the country is actively involved in the process of attracting direct foreign investment, while its strategic position, EU and NATO membership, the qualified labour force, competitive salaries and natural resources are making it attractive to companies from the the Middle East or the Caucasus, which are interested in getting access to European markets. The report says that the shift in the ruling coalitions’ priorities as well as the fiscal consolidation measures contribute to a less predictable business environment, whereas corruption remains a persistent challenge in spite of the significant progress obtained.

DRONE The Romanian National Defence Ministry has today announced that a new drone crashed close to the village of Plauru in Tulcea County, south-eastern Romania near the border with Ukraine. The drone went ablaze after hitting the ground but no casualties or material damage has been reported. According to the sources, a special emergency vehicle and specialized teams of the Defence Ministry have been deployed to the area to put out the fire. An investigation into the incident has been launched in the region.

FOOTBALL Romania’s national football side will tonight be playing the selection of Poland in Warsaw. The match is their third in the present edition of the Nations League. Romania has so far lost both matches it played, 1-2 to Sweden on September 25, and 2-4 against Bosnia-Herzegovina on September 28 and is presently at the bottom of the group with no points, whereas Poland has one point and ranks third in the group. Romania’s next match is at home against Sweden on October 5.

DRILL Today Romania sees the end of one of the biggest interoperability exercises staged in Europe. According to sources with the Romanian Gendarmes’ Corps, the drill has brought together over 500 servicemen and gendarmes from 19 countries on three continents. The military exercises, which were scheduled for the period between September 27 and October 2, took place in four counties in southern Romania. It also included a series of training activities, tactical simulations and troop deployment.

MESSAGE Romania’s President, Nicusor Dan, has told the Romanians in the Diaspora that Romania had made progress in the past 20 years and urged them to consider repatriation. Attending the 9th edition of the RePatriot Gala, housed by the Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest, President Dan underlined the expertise of the Romanian entrepreneurs abroad can contribute to the country’s development. Over 300 business people, managers and Romanian professionals from the country and abroad are attending the RePatriot summit held under the high patronage of the Romanian president. The event, which kicked off in Bucharest, continues until October 4th in the Black Sea resort of Mamaia and other places in Dobrogea, in the south-east. High on the agenda are investment, energy security, infrastructure and Romania’s development. The agenda also includes meetings dedicated to the Romanians in the Diaspora and projects for the Black Sea region.
