NEGOTIATIONS
Talks between the
underground railway workers in Bucharest and the company’s representatives on
the new collective labour agreement ended in a deadlock on Friday, union leader
Ion Radoi announced. According to Radoi, if the fresh round of talks due on
Monday also fails the workers are ready to go on an all-out strike. Trade
unionists are claiming a 42% pay rise, saying that their salaries are seven
times lower than those of their counterparts at the Brussels underground.
According to Radoi, Bucharest underground has 4,560 employees while the minimum
number of employees required should be around 5,000.












COHESION According to the European Commissioner for regional policy, Corina
Cretu, the cohesion policy guarantees a higher living standard for the European
citizens and its results are visible in Romania as well. According to the EU
official, since Romania’s EU accession in 2007, the country has been earmarked
over 45 billion Euros worth of EU funds. Commissioner Cretu is paying a two day
formal visit to her native country on Monday and Tuesday. High on her visit’s
agenda, there are talks with high representatives of the authorities in
Bucharest.












PRESIDENT Romanian president Klaus
Iohannis on Friday left the Military Hospital in Bucharest after a common
surgical intervention in his left shoulder, sources with the hospital have
announced. The patient is in good condition and currently undergoing post
surgery treatment and physical recovery. The president had previously suffered
the same intervention in his right shoulder. According to sources with the
Romanian presidency, the president is in good health and able to do his job.










TENNIS Romanian tennis player Marius Copil on Friday qualified for the
semifinals of the ATP tournament in Basel, Switzerland after a 7-6, 7-5 win
against US challenger Taylor Fritz. The 28 years old Romanian player, who is
currently on the 93rd position in the ATP ranking, had obtained in
the competition’s round of 16, the most important win in his career against
Croatian Marin Cilic, the world’s number six. Copil played only one ATP finals
in Sofia in February, when he lost the match to Mirza Basic of Bosnia.
