Presidency – The president of Romania Nicuşor Dan on Monday announced the appointment of a team of presidential and state advisors. These appointments reflect the president’s commitment to a professional, efficient administration in full accordance with the priorities of the presidential mandate, the Presidency said. The team of advisors includes, among others, Marius Lazurca as presidential advisor on foreign policy, Valentin Naumescu as presidential advisor for European affairs, Ana-Maria Geană as state advisor for the Romanian diaspora, and the former liberal PM Ludovic Orban as presidential advisor on domestic policy.
Nobel – The scientists Mary Brunkow and Fred Ramsdell, from the United States, and Shimon Sakaguchi, from Japan, have won this year’s Nobel Prize in Medicine for groundbreaking work in peripheral immune tolerance. According to the Nobel committee, the trio’s discoveries laid the foundation for a new field of research and have spurred the development of new treatments, for example for cancer and autoimmune diseases. After the medicine prize, the Nobel season continues with the prize in physics on October 7, followed by the prize in chemistry on October 8, the literature prize on October 9 and the peace prize on October 10, the only one awarded in Oslo.
Weather – Romania is facing days of heavy rain, wind and snowfall in the mountains. The most severe phenomena are expected in the southeast, where starting on Tuesday night a code red alert for rain will be in place until Wednesday night. Specialists warn that 110-120 liters of rain per square meter will accumulate. During the same period, a code orange alert is announced in the south, southeast, east and centre. In the Southern Carpathians, sleet and snow are expected at altitudes of over 1,700 meters.
Law – The Romanian Senate adopted, as the first chamber notified, the draft law that will regulate the access of minors up to 16 years of age to major online platforms, and also to a certain type of content on the Internet. According to the document, children under 16 will be able to create and access social platforms only with the consent of their parents. Harmful content is defined as any written, audio, video or image content that promotes alcohol, energy drinks, cigarettes, violence, hatred, pornography, self-harm, addictions, fraud or hate speech, including on the basis of race, sex, religion, sexual orientation, exploitation of minors or any other form of content that poses a significant risk to the physical and emotional development of the minor. The law goes to the Chamber of Deputies for the decisive vote.
Trains – A direct train on the Kyiv – Ungheni – Bucharest North and return route will be put into circulation from October 10, CFR Călători informed on Monday. According to a company press release, the international train IR 99/401 Kyiv – Bucharest North will run starting from October 10, and the international train IR 402/100 Bucharest North – Kyiv will run starting from October 11. The price of a ticket on the Bucharest North – Kyiv route, for a sleeping car, is 73.4 Euros.
Defense – The Romanian Minister of Defense, Liviu-Ionuţ Moşteanu, and the Chief of the Defense Staff, General Gheorghiţă Vlad, met, on Monday in Bucharest, with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of Pakistan, General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, who is visiting Romania. The discussions focused on expanding military cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries and on analyzing the security situation, both in the Black Sea region and in the Near and Middle East, and South and East Asia, respectively. Minister Ionuţ Moşteanu highlighted Romania’s commitment to strengthening regional security and emphasized the important role of the defense dialogue between the two states. Romania concluded a defense cooperation agreement with Pakistan in early 2013. The collaboration takes place within a joint military committee, which organizes annual meetings. (LS)
