Government. The Romanian Prime Minister-designate, the independent Luca Niculescu, held consultations on Thursday with the parliamentary political parties with a view to forming a new government. In the morning he held talks with the leadership of the Social Democrats (left-wing). PSD President Sorin Grindeanu stated that his party, which holds the largest number of seats in Parliament, did not support a technocratic government and called on the PNL and UDMR to join the executive led by Luca Niculescu, alongside the party he leads. The Prime Minister-designate then held a meeting with the leaders of the PNL (centre-right). The leader of the Liberals, acting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, has stated that the PNL does not intend to form part of Luca Niculescu’s government, as it has decided to no longer participate in governments alongside the PSD. He has, however, specified that the Liberals are willing to vote in favour of the formation of the government proposed by the Prime Minister-designate. At the end of his latest meeting with representatives of the UDMR, Luca Niculescu expressed optimism regarding the prospects of securing support for a future government. He stated that he has confidence in the power of dialogue and noted that all the parties involved in the discussions agreed to maintain the country’s fiscal and budgetary trajectory. Prior to the consultations, Luca Niculescu said that he would take the parties’ priorities into account and that he would endeavour to present a realistic governing programme. The Prime Minister-designate will continue consultations with the parties next week, on Monday with the USR and the National Minorities Group, as well as with other parliamentary groups. He must submit the programme and the list of proposed ministers to Parliament by next Thursday. Niculescu is the fourth nominee for Prime Minister in the five months since the Government collapsed following a motion of no confidence.
Central Bank. The National Bank of Romania has kept the monetary policy rate at 6.5 per cent per annum for the eighth consecutive meeting. Rates for the lending facility and deposits remain at 7.5 per cent and 5.5 per cent respectively. The move comes after inflation fell to 6.17 per cent in August, down from 10.42 per cent in June. The NBR warns, however, that inflation will start to rise again by the end of the year, driven by higher fuel and energy prices, higher prices for certain raw materials and exchange rate movements. The Central Bank also noted that Romania’s economy stagnated in the second quarter, while household consumption continued to fall.
ECOFIN. The Romanian Acting Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, is attending the meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) in Luxembourg, where current economic and financial challenges, the impact of developments in the energy markets and the coordination of fiscal policies at European level are being discussed. The talks are focused, amongst other things, on managing the impact of the war in Ukraine on the European economy, as well as on the coordination of structural policies at European Union level, the cited source notes. Alexandru Nazare attended Thursday’s Eurogroup meeting in its inclusive format, which brought together the ministers of the economy and finance from all European Union member states, including those outside the eurozone. For Romania, the main topics of interest are the development of capital markets, improving the efficiency of public finances, and the impact of developments in the energy markets on competitiveness and costs within the economy. On Friday, the Minister of Finance will take part in the official sessions of the ECOFIN Council, whose agenda includes the competitiveness of the banking sector, energy competitiveness, Europe’s economic recovery and the implementation of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).
Nobel. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on Thursday that the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature had been awarded to the Canadian writer Anne Carson “for her bold and inventive work, which, in a playful dialogue with classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature”. On Monday, the Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to the American Karl Deisseroth and the Germans Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel; on Tuesday, the Prize in Physics went to the Belgian Francis Halzen; and on Wednesday, the Prize in Chemistry was shared between the French researcher Henri Kagan and the Japanese researcher Kenso Soai. Following the Literature Prize, the prizes for Peace and Economics will be awarded. The Nobel Prizes come with a sum recently increased to 12 million Swedish kronor (equivalent to approximately 1.21 million US dollars). The Nobel Prize was established by the wealthy Swedish chemist and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel (1833–1896), best known as the inventor of dynamite.
