ROMANIAN DIPLOMACY DAY – September 1 is the Romanian Diplomacy Day. The day is also marked as part of the annual meeting of the Romanian Diplomacy that is coming to an end in Bucharest today. The last day of the meeting is devoted to the issue of the Romanian citizens living abroad. On Wednesday, the Romanian President Klaus Iohannis received the ambassadors, the general consuls and the directors of the Romanian Cultural Institutes attending the meeting. On the occasion, President Iohannis also presented the priorities of Romanias foreign policy.



PARLIAMENT ORDINARY SESSION – The Romanian Parliament is meeting today for the second ordinary session of 2016, which is the last one for the 2012-2016 legislature. The leaders of the main parties referred to the priorities of the current session, which are related to the social-economic, medical and educational fields. The list of issues that are to be debated by Parliament also includes the reduction of the social security contributions by 5%, the lawyers law, the draft law allowing smoking in enclosed spaces and the draft law on prevention in healthcare.



OSCE MEETING – The Romanian Foreign Minister Lazăr Comănescu will participate Friday in Postdam, Germany, in the Informal Meeting of the foreign ministers of the OSCE countries. Organized by Germany, which is holding the OSCE presidency in 2016, the meeting is aimed at debating current issues related to security as well as to the conflict in eastern Ukraine, the anti-terror fight and the phenomenon of migration. The Romanian Foreign Minister will insist on the need to boost the OSCE actions in solving prolonged conflicts, and consequently on identifying a political solution to the Transdniester conflict, while observing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova.



ORTHODOX MEETING – 2,500 people from all Romanian Orthodox Bishoprics as well as the representatives of other Orthodox Churches are participating in the Meeting of the Young Orthodox People the world over, which is taking place from Thursday to Sunday in Bucharest. The event will focus on the role and importance of young people within the church. They will approach such issues as the promotion of family values and the importance of the idea of volunteering, in the context in which the Romanian Patriarchate is coordinating as many as 800 social institutions that have a philanthropic mission.



TENNIS – The worlds fifth tennis player Romanian Simona Halep is today taking on Lucie Safarova from the Czech Republic in the second round of the US Open, the years last Grand Slam tournament with 22 million dollars in prize money. In the same stage of the competition, 58th-seeded Romanian Monica Niculescu has defeated her compatriot Ana Bogdan. In the womens doubles Monica Niculescu and Vania King of the USA have qualified for the second round after a win against the US pair Ashley Weinhold/Caitlin Whoriskey. In the mens doubles Romanian – Dutch pair Horia Tecau/ Jean Julien Rojer has also made it to the next stage after beating Florian Mayer of Germany and Julian Knowle of Austria. Another Romanian pair Irina Begu / Ioana-Raluca Olaru will be taking on Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia and Andrea Petkovic of Germany in the first round of the US Open.
