Inflation. The annual inflation rate rose to 9.9% in Romania in August, from 7.84% in July, as the prices of non-food goods rose by 10.48%, of services by 9.85%, and of food products by 8.92%, according to data published today by the National Institute of Statistics. Electricity prices rose the most in August, by over 65% year-on-year and 2.56% compared to the previous month, followed by fresh fruit, with over 41% year-on-year, and hygiene and cosmetic services, with an increase of over 19%. The Governor of the National Bank of Romania, Mugur Isărescu had predicted last month that inflation would rise sharply in September, and would likely exceed 9% by the end of the year.

Drones.
MEPs today strongly condemned the violation of Polish airspace by Russian drones and welcomed NATO’s response, while calling for tougher sanctions against Moscow and concrete and rapid measures to strengthen the eastern flank. Romanian President Nicuşor Dan says there is no cause for concern in Romania after numerous Russian drones entered Polish airspace on Wednesday and were shot down by Warsaw’s air defense forces. In a televised interview, the head of state said that NATO has clear procedures for such situations and that Romania is prepared to apply them, with the appropriate equipment. If faced with a similar situation, Romania, supported by its allies, would react in the same way as Poland, Dan added. The president said that, in discussions with NATO partners, Romania had expressed its solidarity with Poland. We will return with more details after the news.

EU. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed on Wednesday before MEPs gathered in Strasbourg for her State of the Union address the need for vigilance as the EU faces a world dominated by imperial ambitions and wars. She called for unity and urged increased investment in security and defense. The Union should find a new way to finance Ukraine’s defense against Russia, the European Commission president added. Details after the news.

Government. The Romanian government will supplement the budget of the Ministry of Health from its Reserve Fund to ensure treatment abroad for patients with serious and very serious conditions. According to the Executive, 20 million lei (approximately 4 million euros) will be allocated for this purpose. The agenda for today’s government meeting also includes a legislative act allowing the purchase of a state-of-the-art aircraft to improve the efficiency of external border surveillance and the effective management of Border Police activities in combating and preventing illegal migration and smuggling.

Commemoration.
September 11 remains a painful wound, but also a warning: freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights are never guaranteed; these values must be defended through actions and commitment, not just statements. This is the message conveyed by Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan at the commemoration of the 24th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States. Romania remains firmly committed to its strategic partnership with the US and to international efforts for peace and security, with a special role in the Black Sea region, where stability is essential for the entire Euro-Atlantic community, the head of the Bucharest government added.

Handball.
Romania’s men’s handball champions, CS Dinamo Bucharest, were defeated by Portuguese team Sporting Lisbon, 33-30, on Wednesday evening, on home turf, in their debut match in Group A of the new edition of the Champions League. Dinamo will play its next match on September 17 in Trondheim, Norway, against Kolstad Handball. At the end of last week, in the Women’s Champions League, Gloria Bistrița (north-western Romania) made its debut with a 29-26 home victory in Group A against the Norwegians from Storhamar, while champions CSM Bucharest suffered a 27-28 defeat in Group B against the Danish team Ikast.
