Border. More than 26,000 Ukrainian citizens crossed the Romanian border illegally since the start of the Russian invasion of their country, said Florin Coman, the head of the regional inspectorate of the Border Police in Sighetu Marmaţiei, in the north. Most Ukrainians entering Romania came via the mountainous part of Maramureş. Some even returned home and became guides for others. The border police manages over 360 km of the northern border with Ukraine, covering the counties of Satu Mare, Maramureş and Suceava. The border is sometimes crossed through the most dangerous places.

Motion. The Senate is debating a simple no-confidence motion on Monday filed by the Alliance for the Union of Romanians, the nationalist opposition, against education minister Daniel David, from the pro-western government formed by the Social Democratic Party, the National Liberal Party, the Save Romania Union and the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania. The initiators of the motion say the national education system has been subjected to brutal austerity measures and are criticising the government’s decision to increase the number of teaching hours, merging schools and cutting scholarships. The minister says these measures made it possible to pay staff salaries and scholarships by the end of the year and contributed to Romania’s keeping its country rating. He said in an interview that if the motion passes, he will resign.

Exercise. Over 5,000 soldiers from ten NATO allies will participate, between October 20 and November 13, in the multinational exercise DACIAN FALL 2025 (DAFA 25), held in Romania and Bulgaria. According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence in Bucharest, the soldiers, backed by 1,200 pieces of technical equipment, come from Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Italy, Luxembourg, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Spain. Planned by the Multinational Division Command South-East (HQ MND-SE) in Bucharest, the exercise will take place simultaneously in the Romanian training ranges in Cincu, Smârdan, Capu Midia, Babadag, Bogată, Alba Iulia, Hanu Conachi, Giarmata, Cârţişoara, as well as in Novo Selo, in Bulgaria. The first convoys of military equipment will enter Romania starting with September 20, crossing the border at Curtici, in the west. The Romanian authorities, together with NATO allies, have adopted measures to limit the impact on local communities and the road travel, planning most movements for night time. NATO exercises, including DACIAN FALL 2025, are defensive in nature and are carried out in full compliance with the international obligations taken by Romania, the Ministry of National Defence also said.

Counterfeit. Over 3,000 items of clothing suspected of being counterfeit and estimated at some 70 thousand euros, were discovered during a check on a bus travelling on the Turkey-Poland route, says the Giurgiu regional Inspectorate of the Border Police, in southern Romania. The clothes, for which the driver could not present the documents of origin or authentication, were inscribed with the names of protected brands. Also in Giurgiu, the border police discovered in a truck driven by a Bulgarian citizen, approximately 40,000 cigarettes and almost 10 kg of tobacco, estimated at over 60,000 lei. The packages of different brands had a Bulgarian excise stamp.

Handball. The Romanian women’s handball champions, CSM București, tonight play Ferencvaros Budapest from Hungary in the second leg of Group B of the Champions League. In the opening round of the group stage, CSM suffered a narrow defeat away from home, 27-28, to the Danish team Ikast. On Saturday, CS Gloria Bistrița defeated DVSC Schaeffler away, 34-33, in Debrecen, in Hungary, in a match from Group A. Gloria won with a goal scored in the last second of the match, thus securing its second consecutive victory in the group, after 29-26, at home, in the first round, against the Norwegian side Storhamar.

tennis. The match between tennis players Gabriel Gheţu and Cesar Cruz was interrupted at 6-1, 2-6, 5-2 for the former, in Santa Tecla, as part of a Romania vs El Salvador match, in the first round of the Davis Cup World Group II. 17-year-old Gabriel Gheţu, world no. 765, who was playing for the first time in a Davis Cup match, was serving for the match against 19-year-old Cruz when the match was suspended due to rain, after two hours and 16 minutes of play. In the first singles match, Radu David Ţurcanu (19 years old, 660 ATP) defeated Marcelo Arevalo, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2. Romania has never played El Salvador in the Davis Cup before.
