AGREEMENT The US embassy in Bucharest on Friday announced the official entry into force of the bilateral Social Security Agreement between the United States and Romania. Initially signed in Bucharest on March 23 2023, the agreement takes effect following the completion of all ratifying procedures. This milestone deepens the US-Romania Strategic Partnership by removing administrative barriers, protecting benefit rights and eliminating financial burdens for cross-border workers, retirees and multinational employers. This framework marks a significant advance in bilateral trade, offering long-term economic security to both Romanian and American citizens and businesses, a communiqué released by the embassy says.
MESSAGE Romania’s President, Nicusor Dan on Friday congratulated Giorgia Meloni, after the government she is heading had become the longest-serving in the history of Italy. According to Dan, government stability ensures institutional continuity. In his message on a social network, Nicusor Dan highlighted the tight relations between Romania and Italy as well as the importance of the Romanian community in this country. ‘Romania and Italy are connected through a Strategic Partnership with solid foundations. Over one million Romanians are living and working in Italy, the biggest Diaspora in this country. Italy is also Romania’s biggest trade partner and the main source of the foreign-capital companies here. We are marking these ties through the Romania-Italy Cultural Year,’ President Dan went on to say.
DRONE Waves have washed drone debris onto the shores of Constanta, in south-eastern Romania. There was no explosive payload and the fragments have been taken over by the Coast Guard. Several incidents of this kind have been reported in the past months on the Romanian Black Sea coast and in one case, an explosive payload has been found. According to a communiqué, over August 24 and 30, the Ministry of National Defence handled and released public information on eleven situations registered close to Romania’s border or on the national territory against the background of the Russian attacks against the Ukrainian infrastructure.
TENNIS The Romanian tennis player, Sorana Cirstea on Friday clinched a two-set win against Jasmine Paolini of Italy, in the third round of the US Open, the year’s last Grand Slam tournament. In the previous round, Cirstea, 36, and seeded 16th in the aforementioned competition secured a 2-0 win against Diane Parry of France. In 2026, Cirstea made it to the second round of Australian Open, to the quarter finals at Roland Garros and the third round in Wimbledon.
MEETING Romania’s interim Foreign Minister, Oana Țoiu, met in London with her British counterpart, Ed Miliband. According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest, the meeting’s agenda included the Romanian Diaspora in the United Kingdom, economic cooperation, security and partnership in education and culture. On this occasion, Oana Țoiu highlighted the remarkable contribution of the over one million Romanian citizens living in the UK to strengthening bilateral relations. She also expressed gratitude for the enhanced air policing mission conducted by the Royal Air Force in Romania from March to July 2026. Furthermore, both officials discussed the current state of bilateral trade exchanges and Romania’s OECD accession, the Foreign Ministry release specified.
