SRI foils Russian sabotage plot targeting military and Infrastructure sites

The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) announced that, jointly with DIICOT (the anti-mafia prosecution office), the Ministries of Defense and Internal Affairs, and foreign partner services, it has prevented a sabotage operation coordinated by the Russian Federation on Romanian territory. In a press release, SRI specified that it monitored a Russian citizen who was instructed to photograph and film communications centers and national military bases used by NATO allies, headquarters of institutions within the National Defense, Public Order, and National Security System, as well as critical infrastructure. He also photographed Antonov Ukrainian cargo aircraft located on Romanian territory. This followed the same pattern that Russian sabotage networks have used in other European states, SRI noted, adding that the investigation revealed Russia continues to use vulnerable individuals to carry out illegal activities.

Air defense alert: Spanish F-18 jets scrambled over Eastern Romania

The radar surveillance system of the Romanian Ministry of National Defense detected an aerial target in the eastern part of the country on Tuesday afternoon. According to a Ministry release, alert measures were issued for the population across five eastern counties. Two F-18 aircraft from the Spanish Air and Space Force, currently deployed for the Enhanced Air Policing mission at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base (southeast), scrambled to monitor the situation.

INSCOP survey: 64% of Romanians favor compromise for a fast government coalition

Nearly 64% of Romanians believe it is more important for political parties to reach a swift agreement to form a full-powered government, even if each party must make compromises. However, over a quarter, just under 27%, feel it is more important that parties avoid making major compromises, even if the process takes longer. These are the main findings of a survey published Tuesday, through which INSCOP gathered public opinion regarding the formation of the new executive and the extension of the interim government. Data was collected between September 1 and 7, coinciding with the announced resumption of talks to designate a new prime minister. On May 5, the PNL-USR-UDMR minority government, led by Liberal leader Ilie Bolojan, was dismissed following a motion of no confidence initiated by former coalition partners PSD alongside the nationalist opposition party AUR. PNL and USR subsequently declared they would not join a cabinet that includes PSD. The two nominations made by President Nicușor Dan, a presidential advisor and a sidelined Liberal politician, have so far failed to resolve the political crisis.

President Nicușor Dan calls education scores a “a major warning signal”

The PISA 2025 study results represent a major alarm bell that must not be ignored, and the outlook is concerning, declared President Nicușor Dan after data released Tuesday revealed that over half of 15-year-old Romanian students fail to reach basic proficiency in mathematics, while the share in reading stands at 48%. In a press statement published on the Presidential Administration website, the head of state stressed the need for public policies prioritizing early identification and support for students at educational risk, a data-driven national evaluation system, reduced dropout rates, and strengthened basic skills in reading, math, and science. The president emphasized that Romania must invest more, more consistently, and more intelligently in education.
