Discus thrower Alin Firfirică has been nominated Athlete of the week

Romania came first in the men’s contest of the World Throwing Cup in Leiria, Portugal. Our male athletes have won three of the total four medals reaped by the Romanian delegation in the aforementioned competition. Alin Firfirica walked away with gold from the discus throw event, whereas Bianca Ghelber and Alexandru Novac became silver medalists in the hammer throw and javelin events respectively.
Also in the javelin throw, but in the under-23 competition, Vlad Alexandru Turcu won the bronze medal.
For his performance in Portugal, Radio Romania International has designated Alin Firfirică athlete of the Week.
Last Saturday in Leiria, Firfirică compelled international recognition with a throw of 66 meters and 7 centimeters. Next came, the Olympic vice-champion Simon Pettersson of Sweden with 63 meters and 8 centimeters. The third was Daniel Jasinski of Germany, an athlete two meters and 7 centimeters tall, who was also the bronze medalist at the Rio Olympics in 2016. In Leiria, Jasinski threw 61 meters and 84 centimeters.
Alin Firfirică was born in Timișoara, western Romania, on November 3rd 1995 and obtained his first big performance as a senior player in 2019, when he came fourth at the World Championships in Doha, with a throw of 66 meters and 46 centimeters. In the same year he won gold at the Military World Games in Wuhan. Then he was designated the best Romanian athlete of the year by the Romanian Athletics Federation. He next qualified for the Olympic Games in Tokyo where sadly he failed to qualify for the finals and ended on the 17th position. At the World Championship in Eugene, Oregon, in 2022, Firfirica came seventh. At the European Championship in Munich, the same year, he came also seventh. He was again nominated athlete of the year in Romania.
