For football fans in Romania, the fall season of European interclub competitions starts today. On Thursday, FCSB face their first group match in Europa League, against Go Ahead Eagles of the Netherlands. The match will take place at 7.45 PM, Romanian time, in Deventer, some 100 kilometers west of Amsterdam.
The Romanian team is coming off another defeat in the domestic championship. On Friday, coach Elias Charalambous’s team lost the away match to FC Botoşani 1-3, after leading 1-0. Several first lineup players were absent from the Bucharest team, mainly due to injuries. Adrian Şut, for example, sustained an injury injured during his call-up to the Romanian national team, but will travel to the Netherlands nevertheless. Montenegrin Risto Radunovic, who was also absent from the team for the match in Botoşani, will also be part of the squad. Due to the many absences, FCSB has recently tried all kinds of playing formulas, but none of them have yielded results in the domestic championship games. At the moment, after 10 rounds in the current edition, FCSB ranks 13th, a play-off position for remaining or relegating from the Super League, with one win, four draws and five losses. The club’s fans and officials are waiting for the team to return to the level of play of last year, when the team started badly the group phase, but upped its game along the way. FCSB last year reached the round of 16 of Europa League, then won the Super League.
Thursday’s opponent, Go Ahead Eagles, won 2-0 in Zwolle on Sunday in the Eredivisie. At the moment, after 6 rounds, the team is ranked 9th in the league standings, with two wins, three draws and a single defeat, recorded exactly one month ago, at home, against Sparta Rotterdam – score 0-3.
Let us further note that the other team representing Romania in European competitions, Universitatea Craiova, makes its debut next Thursday in the main group of Conference League. Universitatea will face Rakow of Poland away from home. (VP)
