Romania has three teams in the knockout stages of the European women’s handball competitions. Two of them, CSM Bucharest and Gloria Bistrița, are playing in the Champions League, and Rapid Bucharest in the EHF European League. Let’s start with the Romanian presence in the first continental competition. CSM Bucharest ranked second in Group B and goes directly to the quarterfinals, where they will meet the winner of the play-off between Podravka Koprivnica and Esbjerg. On Saturday, in the last match of the group stage, CSM defeated Ikast 33 to 24 in Bucharest. It is worth noting the course of the Romanian champion, who, after a timid debut in the League, marked by defeats, has registered eight consecutive victories. The contribution of the new coach, Montenegrin Bojana Popovic, has been very important. In Group A, Gloria Bistrița took 4th place and goes to the “quarterfinals” play-off, where they will face the Danish team Ikast, which came in fifth place in Group B. The chances of the Transylvanian team to be among the top eight teams in Europe are quite high.

In the EHF European League, only Rapid Bucharest, which won Group C, will advance to the quarterfinals. They went all the way to the last stage without losing. Sure of first place before the last game, scheduled for last weekend, they did not force themselves in the confrontation in Bucharest with Lokomotiva Zagreb and ended the match defeated 29 to 24. At the end of March, Rapid will meet, in the quarterfinals, the Danish team Viborg. In Group A, Minaur Baia Mare had a good debut, in which they won three of the first four games. However, the final was sad. The team from Maramureș lost its last two games, namely against Larvik, at home, with a score of 28 to 31, then away, in Mosonmagyaróvár, with a score of 26 to 28, and fell to 3rd place. In Group D, Corona Brașov took 3rd place. It was surpassed by two formidable teams, namely Dijon, from France, and Viborg, but took points from both teams. It won in Dijon, and drew the match with Viborg. However, it lost its home matches against both teams. (LS)
