This week brings another round of fixtures in the European interclub football competitions. The remaining Romanian teams in the tournaments have matches scheduled on Thursday. FCSB will take part in their fourth Europa League match, while Universitatea Craiova will play their third game in Conference League.
In their first three Europa League matches, FCSB recorded one win and two losses. They defeated Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles 1–0 away from home, then lost 0–2 at home to Switzerland’s Young Boys Bern, and 1–2 to Italy’s Bologna. On Thursday, the Romanian champions will travel to face another Swiss side, FC Basel. In Europa League, the Swiss side also has one win and two defeats, having beaten Stuttgart but lost to Freiburg and Lyon. Their latest domestic result was a 0–0 draw against Young Boys. After 12 rounds, Basel sits in second place in the Swiss Super League.
FCSB’s situation is less favorable domestically, as they currently rank 8th in Romania’s top flight competition after a modest start to the season, although the team has shown steady improvement from one match to the next. Their most recent result was a 2–0 away win grabbed against Universitatea Cluj.
In Conference League, Universitatea Craiova will play away against Austrian side Rapid Vienna. In their previous matches, Universitatea lost 0–2 in Poland to Raków and drew 1–1 at home against the Armenian club Noah. Rapid Vienna have suffered heavy defeats in both their Conference League outings so far: 1–4 away to Lech Poznań and 0–3 at home to Fiorentina. In the Austrian league, the Vienna side currently sits second, just one point behind leaders RB Salzburg.
Universitatea Craiova are also performing fairly well in Romania’s Super League, where they rank 3rd, only three points behind the frontrunners FC Botoșani and Rapid Bucharest. The team started the season strongly but has slowed down recently, drawing their last two league games: 0–0 away against Metaloglobus Bucharest and 2–2 at home against Rapid. (VP)
