The 2024-2025 football season has come to an end. The last round was the two-leg playoffs for promoting to the Super League. Metaloglobus, from the second tier league, got promoted for the first time, after drawing 1-1 and winning 1-0 against Poli Iași. The win for the Bucharest team was a big surprise, considering that it benefited from a much smaller annual budget than its competitors. The press presented the team’s expenses in 2024, estimated at €412 thousand, less, for example, than the annual salary of veteran Vlad Chiricheş, from the champion team FCSB, who earned €480 thousand last season.

The second team to get promoted to the Super League was Unirea Slobozia. The team from Ialomița defeated FC Voluntari, after 1-2 in the first leg and 1-0 in the second leg, then 4-3 at the penalty shootout. From the second league, FC Argeș and Csikszereda got promoted directly to the first division. Meanwhile, Gloria Buzău and Sepsi Sfântu got relegated to the second-tier league.

Let’s move on to the ranking podium. For the second time in a row, FCSB has won the championship. The team will perform in the preliminaries of Champions League. CFR Cluj, the second-ranked team, will perform in the preliminaries of Europa League, after winning the Romanian Cup. The teams in 3rd and 4th place, Universitatea Craiova and Universitatea Cluj respectively, will compete in the preliminaries of the third continental competition, Conference League.

The best Romanian players at present, however, have not gone on vacation. The national team will play Austria on Saturday away from home in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Group H. Then, on Tuesday, June 10, the Romanian footballers will play Cyprus at home. In March, Romania lost, at home, 0 to 1 to Bosnia Herzegovina, then won 5 to 1 in San Marino. (VP)
