European club handball competitions are in full swing, both in the men’s and women’s categories. On Wednesday, the two men’s teams representing Romania in the EHF European League, the second-tier continental competition, played their matches. Unfortunately, both left the court defeated.
CSM Bucharest met the French team Chambéry at the Polivalentă Hall in the capital, in a match counting towards Group C. The guests secured a clear victory, 33 to 25. The top scorer for the Romanian team was Andrei Drăgan with 6 goals. For CSM, this was their second consecutive defeat in the group stage. In a week, the Bucharest team will play again on home turf against the Bosnian side RK Izviđač.
In Group E, HC Buzău was defeated away from home by the Spanish team Granollers, 31-37. The Romanian vice-champions maintained a balanced game for only the first five minutes, after which the hosts pulled away. Claudiu Andrei Lazurca was the visitors’ most efficient player, scoring 8 goals. Buzău remains with one point in the group standings, ranking 3rd, tied on points with the Portuguese team Águas Santas Milaneza in 4th, which has an inferior goal average. HC Buzău will play its next match on October 13 away against the German team Flensburg, a three-time winner of the competition.
In the EHF Champions League, Group E, Dinamo Bucharest will play an away game against Barcelona on Thursday. The Catalans lead the standings with two victories in their first two matches, achieved against Denmark’s Aarhus and France’s Montpellier. The Romanian champions lost their opening fixture against the French side, then secured an away draw against Aarhus. The two teams previously met in the Champions League during the 2021–2022 season. Barça won both in Spain and in Bucharest, but on each occasion, Dinamo gave the Catalans a solid challenge. That same year, Barcelona went on to win the Champions League. (VP)
