Former Romanian-Canadian boxer and IBF super middle weight world champion Lucian Bute, in 2021 will be included in the Sports Pantheon in Quebec for the notable performances he succeeded in his career, Journal de Montreal writes.



According to Romanian Agerpres news agency, Bute will be celebrated as part of a gala, to be staged in the fall of 2021. Also celebrated will be hockey player Guy Carbonneau, cross-country skier Alex Harvey, woman hockey player Caroline Ouellette and woman cyclist and mountain biking specialist Marie-Hélene Prémont. Also included in this Hall of Fame in Quebec will be woman football referee Sonia Denoncourt and the president of Quebecs National Sports Institutes Managing Board Tom Quinn.



Lucian Bute was born on February 28, 1980 in the locality of Pechea, Galati county, eastern Romania. Butes first notable feat occurred in 1997, when he won his first national juniors title. Lucian Bute retained his title in 1998, when he walked away with the bronze medal in the World Juniors Championships held in Buenos Aires. Fighting in the seniors category, Bute won bronze in the World Championships held in Houston, in 1999, in the 67 kilogram category. Lucian Bute failed to qualify for the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and in the Athens Olympics in 2004. Afterwards, Lucian Bute turned pro.



As a professional boxer, Lucian Bute won the world title belt on October 19, 2007, when he defeated Colombian challenger Alejandro Berrio, by technical knockout. Bute successfully defeated his IBF super middleweight title nine times, over 2007 and 2012. Lucian Butes record as a professional boxer includes 32 wins, of which 25 were by Knock-out. Butes record also includes 5 defeats, 2 of which were by knockout.



In March 2019, at the age of 39, Lucian Bute made public the fact that he retired from competition. (Translation by Eugen Nasta)
