Rowing is the sport in which Romania has achieved its best results in recent years. Whether at the Olympic Games, the World Championships, or the European Championships, Romanian athletes have consistently been at the top. At the Olympic competitions of this century, the Romanian rowers missed the podium only once—at London 2012. At the most recent Games, in France, Romania won gold in the men’s double sculls and the women’s eight, and at the previous edition, in Japan, in the women’s double sculls.

We are currently in the middle of the World Cup season. Two stages have already taken place, in Seville, Spain, and Plovdiv, Bulgaria. On the last day of May, on Andalusian waters, four Romanian crews reached the podium, earning one gold medal, one silver, and two bronze. In the double sculls, Simona Radiș and Ancuța Bodnar won gold. The men’s pair, made up of Ștefan Berariu and Florin Lehaci, took silver. In the women’s quadruple sculls, Emanuela Ciotău, Alexandra Ungureanu, Andrada Moroșanu, and Mariana‑Laura Dumitru finished third. The men’s eight—Cosmin Iulian Pleșescu, Fabrizio‑Alexandru Scripcariu, Florin Arteni, Mugurel Semciuc, Constantin Adam, Sergiu Bejan, Andrei Mândrilă, Laurențiu Danciu, with Irina Despa as coxswain—also won bronze.

The competitions in Bulgaria followed in mid‑June. Romania was represented by a young team, but the results were promising. The Romanian athletes qualified for six finals. The best performance came from the men’s four—Nicolae Răzvan Stoian, Sebastian Alexandru Tașcă, Antonel Avăcăriței, and Sergiu Anfimov—who won silver.

This weekend, the third stage of the World Cup takes place in Lucerne, Switzerland, where Romania is again expected to field its best athletes. At the end of July come the European Championships, held in Varese, Italy. Then, from August 24 to 30, the World Championships are scheduled in Amsterdam. (EE)
