It will be a hot summer for sports, after the World Cup stadiums have quieted down

Every four years, the World Cup is the most important sporting event on the planet. During the days when sports fans’ attention is focused on football, other sports no longer receive the attention they deserve. However, competitions at the highest level are taking place in many disciplines, new stars are emerging, and world records are being broken. And this summer, after the final whistle of the World Cup, world championships in other sports are scheduled, and Romanians could be among the stars.
The World Fencing Championships are taking place in Hong Kong from July 22 to 30. Romania is pinning its hopes mainly on its sabre fencers. At the European Championships in France, held in June, the men’s sabre team won silver medals, and George Dragomir took third place on the podium in the individual sabre event.
In mid-August, the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships will take place in Frankfurt, Germany. Amalia Lică is the medal favorite on Romania’s team. At last year’s World Championships in Rio, she won silver in the clubs event. Three weeks ago, at the World Challenge Cup competition held in Cluj-Napoca, she won the bronze medal in the ball final.
Romanian sports are hoping for the most medals at the World Rowing Championships, which will take place in Amsterdam from August 23 to 30. Last year, in Shanghai, China, Romania fielded 12 crews that competed in men’s, women’s, and mixed events. Half of these crews made it onto the podiums. Romanian athletes won six medals, including two gold and four silver. With this result, Romania ranked fourth in the nations’ standings. Before the World Championships, however, the rowing calendar includes the European Championships, which will take place over the weekend of July 31–August 2 in Varese, Italy. (MI)
