The Olympic flame was put out Sunday night in the Russian resort of Sochi, when the 22nd edition of the Winter Olympic Games officially closed. International media worldwide acknowledged that these have been the most expensive Olympic games ever, but also the most spectacular winter Olympic games of all time.
Worth mentioning at this point is the fact that a previously implausible international security cooperation ensured the complete safety of the Olympic Games in Sochi, in spite of the rumors of terrorist threats coming from neighboring Caucasus.
Russia topped the medal table in the nations’ competition. After 16 days of competition and 98 finals, the delegation of the host country walked away with 13 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze medals. Norway was on the runner-up position, with 11 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze medals. Canada came in third, with 10 gold, 10 silver and 5 bronze medals. The Canadians however won one of the most coveted titles, the ice hockey Olympic medal.
Romania sent to Russia a delegation made of 24 athletes, who took part in 8 sports disciplines: alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, biathlon, ski jumping, figure skating, bobsleigh, luge and skeleton.
The Romanian delegation’s best performance was reported in the bobsleigh event. The women’s and the two-man bobsleigh crews came in 17th in the final rankings. The position is hardly spectacular, but it accurately reflects where the Romanian winter sports actually stand at the moment.
The 2018 edition of the Winter Olympic Games will be hosted by the South-Korean city for Pyeong Chang.
