Cristina Neagu, Romania’s best handball player this millennium said she
would retire from the national side but would continue to play for her club,
the Romanian champions CSM Bucharest, with which she recently extended her
contract. In her almost 20-year-long career, Neagu won two bronze medals with
the national side, namely the European Championship in 2010 and the World
Championship in 2015. She was chosen best player in
the world four times, in 2010, 2015, 2016 and 2018. At this year’s edition of
the World Championship, hosted jointly by Denmark, Norway and Sweden, Cristina
Neagu was part of the team but only played one match, against Germany in the
Main Round. Romania ranked 12th at the World Championship, and will
thus not take part in the Olympic Games qualifying tournaments.

Moving on to men’s volleyball, the Romanian Cup holders SCM ”U’
Craiova lost on Wednesday away to the polish side Warta Zawiercie 3-nil, in the
first leg of the last 16 of the CEV Cup. The match lasted only 65 minutes. The
second leg will take place on 21st December, in Craiova.

In women’s volleyball, Alba Blaj, CSM Târgovişte, Rapid Bucharest and
Dinamo Bucharest have qualified for the final tournament of the Romanian Cup.
Alba Blaj defeated CSO Voluntari in the quarterfinals with two wins, as did
Rapid against CSM Bucharest and CSM Târgovişte against Corona Braşov. Dinamo
needed the golden set decider to defeat the trophy holders CSM Lugoj, having
lost away and won at home.

Let’s end this round-up with women’s basketball. The Romanian champions Sepsi
Sfântu Gheorghe lost away to the Italian
side Beretta Famila Schio 88-72 and are now bottom of the group ahead of their
next match against the Polish side Lublin, next Wednesday at home. (CM)
