The Romanian basketball side SCM Timișoara was outperformed by the Polish side Dąbrowa Górnicza 90-88, in the finals of the European competition Alpe Adria Cup in Kapfenberg, Austria on Wednesday. The Polish side won thanks to a basket made in the game’s last second and reaped the trophy for the second season in a row. Dąbrowa Górnicza also eliminated SCM Timișoara in the quarter finals last year.
We continue with men’s basket ball competitions, noting that the Romanian side U-BT Cluj-Napoca was stopped in its tracks in the quarter finals of the EuroCup by the English side London Lions, which won the match 91-79. U-BT had made it to this stage of the competition for the first time after coming second in Group B.
In the regional ice hockey competition Erste League, the trophy holder ACSH Gheorgheni, is also the first side to have qualified for the semis after a 4-0 on aggregate in the quarters against Hungarian side Ujpest. ACSH won the last game 6-2 in Budapest on Wednesday. The ‘quarters’ are being held in the ‘best in four games’ system. In different quarter finals match, another Romanian side, Sport Club Miercurea Ciuc, now boasts a 2-1 aggregate advantage against Budapest Jegkorong Akademia, after a 4-3 home win on Wednesday. The fourth match will be held on Saturday. Jegesmedvek and Corona Brașov are now equal, 2-all, after the Hungarians won the two matches in Brașov, and Corona claimed the two games in Miskolc, the last of them ending 4-1 on Wednesday.
In a derby of the 19th leg of the National League in women’s handball, Gloria Bistrița secured a 25 – 22 home win against Rapid Bucharest. Bistrita has made it to the second place in the League’s ranking, which is topped by CSM Bucharest. The second position in the final ranking can earn them a place in the Champions League, as it happened to Rapid last year.
