The Romanian swimmer David Popovici, the Olympic champion in the 200m freestyle, returns these days to international competitions for the first time since last year’s Olympic Games in Paris. He takes part in the U23 European Championships which take place until Saturday in Šamorín, Slovakia. On Thursday, Popovici competes in the 200m freestyle. He will also take part in the 50m and 100m freestyle events, as well as in the 4 x 100-meter freestyle mixed relay. The competitions are held in an outoor pool. Romania is represented by 13 athletes.
The Professional Football League has set the schedule of the upcoming Romanian Super League season, which starts on July 11. In the first round, the champions FCSB will face Hermannstadt, a finalist of the Romanian Cup. CFR Cluj, the country’s vice-champions and holders of the Romanian Cup, will face Unirea Slobozia. Newly promoted Csikszereda will play against the Bucharest side Dinamo, while FC Argeș, back to the top tier, will face Rapid Bucharest. Another team for the first time in the Super League, Metaloglobus (Bucharest), will face Universitatea Cluj, and UTA Arad will take on Universitatea Craiova on home turf. Oțelul Galați play at home against Petrolul Ploiești, while Farul Constanța travel to Botoșani. The second round features the first derby of the championship, between Rapid Bucharest and CFR Cluj, and in the fourth round, Dinamo will face FCSB.
Internazionale Milano, a team coached by the Romanian Cristian Chivu, qualified for the round of 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup, a competition that is currently taking place in the United States. In Seattle, in the last game played on Wednesday night in Group E, Inter beat the Argentinian team River Plate 2-0. The Italians’ goals were scored in the second half by Francesco Esposito and Alessandro Bastoni. The European vice-champions had one player more on the pitch after Lucas Martinez saw the red card for a foul as the last defender on minute 66.
