Coach Emerich Jenei, the architect behind the greatest achievement in the history of Romanian football, passed away on Wednesday, aged 88. He was the head coach of Steaua Bucharest when they won the European Champions Cup in 1986. He also coached the Romanian national team, sitting on the bench at the 1990 World Cup in Italy and at the European Championship hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands in 2000. He died in Oradea after a long illness.

Moving on to basketball. The men’s team U-BT Cluj-Napoca lost at home on Wednesday to the Slovenian side Olimpija Ljubljana, 93-87, in EuroCup Group A. The Transylvanian team was coming off two consecutive wins in the competition: at home against Venezia after extra time, and away against Hamburg. Romanian-American basketball player Daron Russell was the best player for Cluj, scoring 21 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists. With 3 wins and 3 losses, U-BT ranks 4th in Group A.

Also on Wednesday, in Group C of the men’s FIBA Europe Cup, CSM-CSU Oradea won away 89-86 against AEK Larnaca of Cyprus. Romanian-American player Kris Richard was the best player for the Romanian runner-up, with 26 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. In the same group, Corona Brașov lost at home to the Turkish team Aliaga Petkimspor, 97-73. The Turkish team leads the standings with 7 points, followed by Oradea also with 7, then Larnaca with 6, while Brașov is bottom of the tables with 4 points. In the next round, CSM-CSU will play Corona Brașov at home.

Moving on to women’s handball. Gloria Bistrița won 28-23 in an away match against SCM Universitatea Craiova in the 8th round of the National League. Gloria led the scoreboard throughout the match, and the team’s best player was Sonia Seraficeanu, scoring 10 goals. After 6 rounds, the current champion, CSM Bucharest, leads the standings with 16 points, followed by Gloria with 14. However, CSM was left without its coach after Adrian Vasile was sacked by the club’s management following poor results in the Champions League. (VP)
