The Women’s Handball World Championship has begun. The competitions are taking place in Germany and the Netherlands. Among the results from the first day, we noted Germany’s victory over Iceland score 32 to 25 and Montenegro’s success in the match with the Faroe Islands, score 32 to 27. Romania, the only country that has been represented at all World Championships so far, is part of the preliminary Group A, alongside Denmark, Japan and Croatia. On Thursday the first match is between Romania and Croatia, in Rotterdam.

In men’s handball, Dinamo Bucharest lost, on Wednesday, the away game against the Polish team Industria Kielce, score 32 to 34, in the Champions League, Group A. In the second half, Dinamo led on the scoreboard several times, even with a three-goal difference. However, the Poles had a better finish and managed to win. The Romanian champions are in 7th place in the group standings, the last but one, and will play the next match on December 3, at home, against the Danish team Aalborg.

Next up, women’s volleyball. CSO Voluntari defeated the Spanish team Heidelberg Las Palmas 3-1 away from home in the first leg of the round of 32 of the CEV Cup. The team from Ilfov won after almost two hours of play. The second leg will take place next Tuesday, in the Rapid Hall in Bucharest.

At the World Junior Table Tennis Championships in Cluj-Napoca, Romanian player Iulian Chiriță has already secured two medals in the doubles. On Wednesday, he qualified for the semifinals of the men’s doubles with Portugal’s Tiago Abiodun, and in the mixed doubles with Anna Hursey of Wales.

Let’s move on to ice hockey. On Wednesday, two of the best teams in Romania, ACSH Gheorgheni and SC Miercurea Ciuc, met in a match that mattered both for the national championship and for the regional Erste Liga competition. The game, played on the new ice rink Remetea Ice Arena, was won by the Gheorgheni team 2-1. ACSH leads both the domestic championship and the Erste Liga standings, followed in both competitions by Corona Brașov. (LS)
