The Winter Olympic Games are under way in Milan Cortina, with Romanian athletes also taking part. Raluca Strămăturaru and Carmen Manolescu ranked 9th in the women’s doubles luge. This is the best result achieved so far by Romanian athletes at the 2026 Games. Raluca Strămăturaru is at her fifth appearance at the Olympic Games, while Carmen Manolescu is taking part for the first time. The women’s doubles event was introduced to the Olympic program for the first time. The gold medals were won by Italy’s Andrea Voetter and Marion Oberhoffer. The German pair Dajana Eitberger and Magdalena Matschina ranked second, and the Austrian pair Selina Egle and Lara Kipp third.
The men’s basketball side U-BT Cluj-Napoca qualified for the EuroCup play-offs. They ranked 6th in Group A, after defeating the Greek team Aris Salonic 111-92 on Wednesday. The game in the Cluj BTarena was watched by 10,000 spectators. The Romanian team’s best player was Iverson Molinar, who scored 20 points and 7 assists. In the play-offs, U-BT will be facing the third place holder in Group B, Buducnost Podgorica, in Montenegro, on March 10 or 11, in a single leg.
In water polo, CSM Oradea were defeated away by the Italian team Brescia 17-13, on Wednesday, in their last match in the Champions League Group C. CSM finished 3rd in the final group standings and will continue their European journey in the LEN Euro Cup.
In the Romanian Cup in football, CFR Cluj, FC Argeș, Universitatea Cluj and Metalul Buzău qualified for the quarterfinals. On Tuesday, CFR drew 1-1 at home with Rapid Bucharest, and Argeș beat Dumbrăvița 2-1 in Mioveni. The Cluj team won Group A, and the Pitesti team ranked 2nd. On Wednesday, Universitatea Cluj won Group C, after defeating Oțelul Galați, at home, 2-0. Second tier side Metalul Buzău came in second place after defeating another second tier side Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe. The matches in groups B and D are scheduled for Thursday.
