New medals for Romania at the European Weightlifting Championships, taking place in Batumi, on the Georgian Black Sea coast

At the European Weightlifting Championships, currently underway in Batumi, Georgia, Romania has won five medals so far. In the women’s 53-kilo category, Mihaela Cambei won the gold in the snatch and the silver in the clean and jerk and overall. In the 63-kilo category, Andreea Cotruța won the silver medal in the snatch, while in the men’s 79-kilo category, also in the snatch, Tiberiu Donose took the bronze.

 

The Romanian tennis player Elena Gabriela Ruse qualified on Wednesday for the second round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid. She defeated Antonia Ružić 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 in the first round. It was Gabriela’s third consecutive victory in head-to-head matches against the Croatian player. For this win, the Romanian secured a EUR 31,585 check and 35 WTA points. In the second round, she will face Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, seed no. 2. The Moscow-born player has won both games played so far against Ruse, in 2022 in Miami and in 2024 at Wimbledon.

 

In the final of the Romanian women’s volleyball championship, the overall score is 1-1. In the first game, on Monday, Alba Blaj defeated CSO Voluntari at home, 3-1, while the second match, also played in Blaj, on Tuesday, was won by Voluntari, 3-0. The next two games are scheduled in Voluntari next week, on Monday and Tuesday. The final will be played in the „best of five games” system.

 

Records were broken on Wednesday at the Romanian National Swimming Championships, which are currently taking place in Otopeni. In the men’s 200-m medley, Robert Badea set a new Romanian record, with a time of 1.58.86 minutes. In the women’s 100-meter backstroke, Daria Silișteanu was the first Romanian athlete to break the one-minute barrier, and the new record she set is 58.63 seconds. Also in Otopeni, the multiple world and Olympic champion David Popovici won the 50-meter freestyle event, with 22.02 seconds, a performance below the current Romanian record, 21.83 seconds, also held by David Popovici.
