The Romanian athlete Mircea Croitoru on Sunday won the gold medal in
the +100 kg judo category at the Warsaw European Open. He defeated
Slovakia’s Marius Fizel in the final. The competition brought
together 429 athletes from 43 different countries, including 8 from
Romania, six in the men’s and two in the women’s events.

The Romanian athlete Mircea Croitoru on Sunday won the gold medal in
the +100 kg judo category at the Warsaw European Open. He defeated
Slovakia’s Marius Fizel in the final. The competition brought
together 429 athletes from 43 different countries, including 8 from
Romania, six in the men’s and two in the women’s events.
The Romanian ice hockey sides ACSH Gheorgheni and Corona Braşov
reached the semifinals of the Erste Liga regional competition. In the
quarterfinals, Gheorgheni defeated the Hungarian side Dunaújváros
4-nil, while Braşov defeated Sport Club Miercurea Ciuc 4-1. The
system used was the best out of seven matches. The Hungarian side
Budapest Jégkorong Akadémia also advanced to the semifinals, while
the fourth semifinalist will be the winner between two other
Hungarian sides, Jegesmedvék from Miskolc and Ferencváros from
Budapest.
Romania’s national basketball side defeated Cyprus 75-50 on Sunday
in Piteşti in their last match in Group F of the second round of the 2025 EuroBasket pre-qualifiers. This was Romania’s second group
win, their first also against Cyprus. Their best player was the
naturalised American Patrick Richard, with 15 points and five
decisive passes. In another Group F match, Bulgaria defeated Portugal
90-82. Portugal are in the lead with 11 points, followed by Bulgaria,
also with 11 points, Romania, with 8 points, and Cyprus, with 6
points. Romania will next be playing in the third round of the
pre-qualifiers.
Romania
won seven medals, namely one gold, three silver and three bronze, at
the European Junior and Cadet Fencing Championship hosted by the
Estonian capital Tallinn. Romania won the gold in the
Cadet
Women’s Sabre tournamentwith a team that includes
Rosemarie Benciu, Amalia Covaliu, Anastasia Fusea and
Alexandra Mitruş.
The
matches counting for the 27th leg of the Romanian
Superleage were held at the weekend. On Friday, FC U Craiova defeated
Mioveni 2-1 at home; and Farul Constanţa defeated UTA Arad 1-nil
away. On Saturday, Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe defeated the visiting
Hermannstadt 2-1; Universitatea Cluj defeated FC Botoşani 2-nil at
home; while Rapid Bucharest defeated Chindia Târgovişte 2-nil at
home. On Sunday, FC Voluntari defeated Universitatea Craiova 1-nil at
home; and FCSB defeated FC Argeş 2-1 away. The leg’s final match
is held on Monday, with Petrolul Ploieşti playing CFR Cluj. Farul
Constanţa are in the lead in the standings with 58 points, followed
