Romanias Cătălin Chirilă won the bronze medal at the International Canoe FederationCanoe Sprint Super Cup held in Oklahoma City in the US. He came third in the men350 m race, with Sergei Tarnovschi from Moldova winning the race and Martin Fuksafrom the Czech Republic coming in second place. Chirilă is world and Europeanchampion in the C1 mens 1000m. The three were also on the podium last week at theEuropean championship in Munich, in the men 500m, which Fuksa won and whereTarnovschi came second.
For the next two weeks, New York is playing host to the US Open, the final Grand Slamtennis tournament of the year. Romania has five players in the womens singles: 7 thseed Simona Halep, Irina Begu, Sorana Cîrstea, Gabriela Ruse and Jaqueline Cristian.
Romanian Superleague football matches were held at the weekend. On Friday, FCVoluntari drew nil-all at home against Universitatea Cluj, while UTA Arad defeated FC UCraiova 2-1 at home.
