As of this week, Simona Halep has climbed to the 2nd position of the WTA ranking. Halep outclassed Czech contender Petra Kvitova, who thus dropped one place, being now ranked 3rd in the WTA classification. Top of the classification continues to be Japan’s Naomi Osaka. Simona Halep’s present position has been possible thanks to her excellent run in the Miami tournament, an event with more than nine million USD in prize money. Halep reached as far as the semifinals, where she sustained a defeat by Czech challenger Carolina Pliskova in two sets, 7-5, 6-1. Had she outclassed Pliskova, Simona Halep would have once again claimed the top position in the WTA rankings.
