Romania’s national
rugby squad ended the tournament in South America with two wins. In Valparaiso on
June 9, Romania trounced Chile, 27-11. In the second game, Romania had a rather
more difficult task, as in Jundial, Romania outclassed Brazil by the narrowest of
margins, 22-21. For Romania, Christian Chirica, Ovidiu Cojocaru and Florin Vlaicu
scored three tries each, while it was also Vlaicu who successfully converted
three tries and a penalty kick.


Romania’s men’s handball
team was placed at the bottom of the table in Group 6, counting towards the
EURO 2020 preliminaries. In Nantes on Sunday night, in the last fixture of the
qualifiers, Romania sustained a 25-34 defeat by defending champions France. In
Group 6, France is at the top of the table, with 10 points, followed by
Portugal, with 9 and Lithuania, with 3 points. Romania are 4th-placed
in the group, with 2 points on their record sheet. Booking their ticket for the
final tournament were the first two teams in each preliminary group and the
four best third-placed teams.


The European Fencing
Championships are underway in Germany’s Dusseldorf. In the women’s saber event
on Monday, Bianca Pascu went past the group stage with three wins, while in the
first round of the main draw of 64, Pascu defeated Russia’s Yana Egorian,
15-12. Then Bianca Pascu defeated Italian challenger Martina Criscio, also
15-12. In the round of 16, Bianca Pascu sustained a 14-15 defeat by Manon
Brunet of France. According to the Romanian Fencing Federation, Banca Pascu was
15th-place d in the final rankings. Another Romanian fencer, Andreea
Lupu, went past the group stage, but in the main draw of 64 Lupu was
eliminated in the very first game by Spain’s Araceli Navaro, 6-15. Andreea Lupu
was 49th-placed according to the final rankings. With one win each
in the group stage, Maria Matei came in 55th, while Loredana Dima
was 57th-placed, according to the final rankings. Two Romanians
participated in the men’s foil event. In the group stage, Benjamin Bodo
succeeded only one with and was 65th-placed according to the final
rankings, while Silviu Rosu had a no-win record sheet in the group stage and
was 76th-placed according to the final rankings.
