The Romanian women’s handball team came 4th in the European Championships that ended in France on Sunday. The Romanians lost to the Dutch challenger 20-24 in a match for the third position in the competition’s standings. The best Romanian player on the court proved to be Crina Pintea who was included in a competition’s all-star side as the best pivot. The fourth position in the European Championship has secured our players tickets for the World Championship due in Japan, next year. The European title went to the French selection for the first time, after they had secured a 24-21 win against Russia in the finals. The French side had won three bronze medals, whereas the Russians boasted a silver and two bronze medals. The European title has also secured France a place in the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020.

Football now. Last weekend saw the matches counting towards the 20th leg of Romania’s first football league. On Friday in Chiajna, local side Concordia conceded a 6-3 defeat to Poli Iasi, from northern Romania. Concordia versus Poli was the match with the highest number of goals in this championship and also the game that marked the retirement of referee Alexandru Tudor at the end of a remarkable career in domestic and international football.

On Saturday FC Voluntari, on their own turf, ended in a one-all draw their match against Astra Giurgiu. FC Hermannstadt secured an away win against Gaz Metan Medias, while Dinamo Bucharest outperformed Universitatea Craiova 3-0.

On Sunday in Calarasi, southern Romania, local side Dunarea was defeated by Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe 3-0. FCSB clinched a 3-1 win against Botosani, a result which enables them to remain close to the first positions in the table, which is currently topped by CFR Cluj.
