Romania concluded the World Weightlifting Championships addressing cadets and juniors in Lima, Peru, with five medals, four silver and one bronze. Most medals were won by Romanian athlete Tiberiu Donose. In the junior competition, he won three medals in the 73-kg category: bronze in the snatch event, silver in the clean and jerk and also silver in the total event. Also in the junior competition, in the 45-kg category, Ioana Mădălina Miron won silver in the snatch event. In the cadet competition, in the 55-kg category, Lucian Florin Cambei won silver in the snatch final.

 

Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea and Russian Anna Kalinskaya won the doubles event of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid, offering 8 million dollars in total prizes. On Sunday, they defeated the Russian-Belgian pair Veronika Kudermetova / Elise Mertens 6-7, 6-2 and 12-10 in a tiebreak. Anna and Sorana were awarded a 400-thousand-Euro check and 1,000 WTA points in doubles standings. For Cîrstea, this was the sixth WTA doubles title of her career.

 

In the National Women’s Handball League, with two rounds remaining in the current season, CSM Bucharest continues to top the tables, six points ahead of runner up Corona Braşov. On Sunday, in Bucharest, the defending champions defeated SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea 30-24. Crina Pintea was the top scorer for CSM with seven goals.

 

This weekend saw matches in the Romanian Football Super League, counting for round 7 in the group phase. In Group 1, which will decide the champion and Romania’s representatives in European Conference League, on Friday, Rapid Bucharest defeated Universitatea Craiova 2-1 away from home. On Saturday, CFR Cluj defeated local rivals Universitatea 1-0. CFR thus climbed to second place in the standings, four points behind the defending champion, FCSB. The last match of the round is scheduled for Monday: FCSB will take on Dinamo Bucharest.

 

In Group 2, on Friday, in Iaşi, Poli drew 0-0 against Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe. Saturday’s match pitting FC Botoşani against Unirea Slobozia at home, also ended in a draw, 1-1. In the second game of the day, Farul Constanţa defeated Gloria Buzău 1-0 in Ovidiu. On Sunday, FC Hermannstadt won away from home against Oţelul Galaţi 2-1. The last match in Group 2 is slated for Monday: UTA vs. Petrolul. With two rounds left to go, Gloria Buzău has already been relegated to the second-tier division. (VP)
