Romania has ended the European U-23 Swimming Championship in Šamorín, Slovakia with three gold and two bronze medals. David Popovici was the number one athlete of the Romanian delegation with gold in the 100 and 200 meter freestyle races and bronze in the 50 meter event. Furthermore, on the 100 meter distance he set another European record, with 46 seconds and 71 hundredths, which is the second all-time world performance. The other two medals for the Romanian delegation were obtained by Denis-Laurean Popescu, in the butterfly events: gold in the 100 meter race and bronze in the 50 meters. 13 athletes represented Romania in Šamorín.
From the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne athletes from Romania walked away with six medals. Romania’s male and female pairs stepped onto the podium’s first step as well as our eight. The Romanian men’s four and the women’s quadruple sculls became silver medalists, while the men’s eight got bronze.
Health issues had prevented Romania’s men double scull made up of Olympic champions Florin Enache and Andrei Cornea from qualifying for the finals. The event in Lucerne represented the most important test for the Romanian crews before the World Championships due in Shanghai, in September.
Romania’s female volleyball side came third in the final ranking of the European competition Golden League. On Sunday in Ängelholm, Sweden, our athletes clinched a 3-2 win in the third place play-off against the host country. The winners were awarded a 100 thousand Euros bonus.
We end with tennis. Wimbledon saw the onset of the third Grand Slam tournament of the year. The main draw includes five Romanian female players: Jaqueline Cristian, Gabriela Ruse, Anca Todoni, Sorana Cîrstea and Irina Begu.
