Romanian rowers won six gold medals at the European Youth Rowing Championships U23 in the Czech Republic.

The European Youth Rowing Championships for athletes under 23, held in Račice, in the Czech Republic, ended on Sunday. The Romanian delegation left the competition with nine medals, of which six gold, one silver and two bronze. The men’s two-oar, four-oar and 8+1 crews won gold, just like the women’s four-oar and double sculls, and the mixed 8+1 crew. Somehow below expectations, the girls in the 8+1 boat won the silver medals. The women’s two-oar and four-oar crews were awarded bronze.
In tennis, Romanian Anca Todoni took part in the WTA 125 tournament in Montreux, Switzerland. In the singles, she reached the quarterfinals, where she was defeated by Latvian Darja Semenistaja, 6-4, 2-6, 6-0, and won a check of 3,450 dollars and 27 WTA points. In the doubles, Anca went all the way to the final, together with Dutch Arantxa Rus. The two were defeated in the last match by a pair composed of Russian Oksana Selehmetieva and Swiss Simona Waltert, 6-4, 6-1.
The Women’s Handball Champions League started over the weekend. In Group A, Gloria Bistrița debuted with a victory: 29-26, on Saturday, at home, against the Norwegian team Storhamar Handball Elite. The hosts’ top scorer was the Spanish player Danila So Delgado, with 8 goals. In Group B, the Romanian champion, CSM București, was defeated, on Sunday, away, by the Danish team Ikast Handbold, with a score of 28-27. The hosts won with a goal scored in the last second of the game. Slovenian Elizabeth Omoregie was the CSM’s top scorer, with 7 goals.
Știința Baia Mare won, on Sunday, its tenth Romanian rugby championship title. In Bucharest, the team beat SCM USV Timișoara, last year’s champion, 36-24 in the National League final. The podium was completed by Dinamo Bucharest, which, on Saturday, defeated Steaua in the small final, 40-17.
The Romanian football team meets, on Tuesday, in Nicosia, the representative of Cyprus, in the qualifiers for next year’s World Cup. In preparation for this match, the Romanians met, on Friday, in Bucharest, the Canadian team, being defeated 3-nil. (EE)
