Good results for Romanian sports in rugby, fencing and handball.

The Romanian national rugby team defeated Canada 31-21 in a test match on Saturday in Bucharest. They scored three tries, thanks to Cristi Chirica, Tevita Manumua and Ovidiu Cojocaru, who was playing his last game for the national side. Alin Conache converted two tries and scored from four penalty shoot-outs. Both sides have already qualified for the Rugby World Cup to be hosted by Australia in 2027. Romania will play two more test matches this autumn, first against the United States, on November 15, and then against Uruguay, on November 22.

The Romanian men’s sabre team won second place at the World Cup in Algiers. The y lost the final to France 45 to 38. Made up of George Dragomir, Vlad Covaliu, Răzvan Ursachi and Radu Nițu, the Romanian team defeated Chile 45-29 in the first round, Poland, 45-33, in the round of last 16, and Uzbekistan, 45-30, in the quarter-finals, and Japan, 45-40, in the semifinals. Romania’s women’s sabre team ranked 20th.

Next up, it’s women’s handball. In the Champions League, on Saturday, CSM Bucharest won their first away victory this season. They defeated the Norwegian team Sola in Stavanger, 38 to 30. CSM’s top scorers were the Slovenian Elizabeth Omoregie and the Danish Trine Østergaard, with seven goals each. In the Group B standings, CSM climbed to 5th place, with 6 points. In Group A, on Sunday, Gloria Bistrița beat Borussia Dortmund at home, 36 to 32. Danila So Delgado was Gloria’s best player, scoring 11 goals. The Romanian side are in 3rd place in the standings. At the end of the group stage, the two best-ranked teams in each group will go straight into the quarterfinals, while the teams in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th places will go into play-offs to advance to the next round.

Let’s end with football. The matches counting for the 16th leg of the Romanian Super League were held at the weekend. On Friday, Universitatea Cluj defeated Metaloglobus 3-1, and Farul Constanța defeated FC Botoșani 2-0 at home. On Saturday, Petrolul Ploiești drew nill-all against Oțelul Galați at home; Dinamo Bucharest won 4-nil on the National Arena against Csikszereda; and Rapid Bucharest defeated FC Argeș 2-nil at home. On Sunday, CFR Cluj defeated Unirea Slobozia 1-nil; UTA Arad beat Universitatea Craiova 2-1 away; and Hermannstadt drew 3-all against FCSB at home in Sibiu. Rapid top the standings, 3 points ahead of the second-placed FC Botoșani.
