At the Junior World Gymnastics Championships in Manila, Philippines, the Romanian athlete Alexia Blănaru won the bronze in vault on Sunday. She scored an average 13.566 points, and was only outperformed by the US athlete Lavienna Crain, with 13.683, and the Japanese athlete Misa Nishiyama, with 13.633. In the teams’ competition, Romania came out 5th, while in the individual all-around event Alexia Blănaru ranked best, in 13th place, while Aniela Tudor ranked 21st.

 

Romania won the 55th edition of the Carpathian Trophy in women’s handball, held in Bistriţa. The Romanian players won all 3 games they played in the competition: 40-28 on Thursday against Portugal, then 37-30 on Saturday against the Czech Republic, and 37-28 on Sunday against Austria. The tournament was a final rehearsal for the World Championship in Germany and the Netherlands, which begins this week. Romania will compete in Group A, alongside Denmark, Japan and Croatia.

 

In rugby, Romania finished its autumn test match series with a defeat. The “Oaks” were defeated in Bucharest by Uruguay, 31-21. In the other 2 games, Romania beat Canada 31-21 two weeks ago, then was defeated by the US, 26-18 last week.

 

Over the weekend, games in the 17th round of Romania’s football Super League took place. On Friday, in Miercurea Ciuc, Csikszereda beat Unirea Slobozia 2-1, then in Mioveni, Universitatea Craiova won against FC Argeş with the same score. On Saturday, Universitatea Cluj won the match in Arad against UTA 2-0, and the game in Bucharest between FCSB and Petrolul ended in a 1-1 draw. The first match on Sunday, pitting Oţelul against Farul Constanţa in Galaţi, also ended in a draw, 2-2. Then, in Sunday’s derby, in Cluj, CFR defeated Rapid Bucharest 3-0. On Monday, the last two games of this round: Metaloglobus vs Hermannstadt and FC Botoşani vs Dinamo. Rapid currently lead the standings with 35 points, followed by Botoşani and Craiova, with 32 points each. (AMP)
