In the European Cup of Nations in ice hockey, Romania played 3 games against Ukraine in Bucharest last week, and lost all of them. On Thursday, Ukraine won 3-2, on Friday 2-1, and on Saturday, 5-4 after overtime, after the Romanian players had led 4-2. Last month, the two teams met in Elektrenai, in Lithuania, and Ukraine also won, 4-1.
In rugby, the Romanian Wolves lost to the Belgian team Brussels Devils, 51-22, on Saturday evening away from home, in the fifth and final round of the Rugby Europe Super Cup. The Wolves have lost all 5 matches played this season, and finished last in the standings. In Belgium, they managed 3 tries, thanks to Ionuț Donici, Alexandru Savin and Rareș Mîrzac, 2 of which were converted by Gabriel Jipa and Ioan-Ștefan Cojocariu. Jipa also converted a penalty kick. In the final standings, the Spanish club Castilla y Leon Iberians rank first with 25 points, followed by Lusitanos (Portugal), with 20 points, the Brussels Devils with 10 points, Delta (the Netherlands) with 9 points, the Czech team Bohemia Rugby Warriors, also with 9 points, and the Romanian Wolves, with no points. In the semis on January 17, Lusitanos take on the Brussels Devils, and Castilla y Leon Iberians face Delta.
Over the weekend, matches were played for the 20th round of the Romanian Super League’s regular season. On Friday, in Cluj, CFR beat Csikszereda 3-1. Saturday saw matches of the leading teams in the standings. Runners-up FC Botoșani tied in Mioveni with FC Argeș (0-0), but the surprise of the round came in Bucharest, where top-ranking Rapid lost 0-2 to Oțelul Galați. On Sunday, Universitatea Cluj won 1-0 away from home against Petrolul Ploiești, then on the National Arena in Bucharest Dinamo won 4-0 in the match against Metaloglobus. In the third match of the day, in Sibiu, Universitatea Craiova defeated Hermannstadt 2-0. On Monday the last two matches of the 20th round are scheduled: Farul Constanța vs UTA and Unirea Slobozia vs FCSB.
