The first major tennis tournament to be hosted by Romania, kicked off in Cluj, in Transylvania, western Romania,
The Transylvania Women’s Tennis tournament is part of the WTA 250 and has 283 thousand dollars in prize money. The venue is the BTarena, the largest sports arena in Romania, with up to 10 thousand seats. In the first round of the singles contest, the eighth-seeded Hungarian player Anna Bondar, has clinched a 4-6, 7-6, 6-0 win against Anna Seidel, of Germany while Oleksandra Oliynykova of Ukraine has outperformed Mayar Sherif, of Egypt 6-7, 6-4, 6-4. The Spanish Sara Sorribes Tormo has defeated Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria, 6-2, 7-5. Also in the first round, Yue Yuan of China proved to be the tournament’s first surprise by defeating sixth-seeded Croatian challenger, Antonia Ruzic, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. In the doubles contest, the Romanian-Georgian pair, Irina Bara / Ekaterine Gorgodze has qualified for the quarters after a 1-6, 6-2, 10-2 win against the all-Czech pair, Aneta Kucmova and Aneta Laboutkova.
Corona Braşov secured the Romanian Cup in ice-hockey, after 3-0 win on Sunday against Steaua Bucharest. All the goals were scored by the Czech Radim Valchař, who played for Steaua in the season’s first part. This has been the fifth cup won by Corona. Although the Bucharest side has won the largest number of trophies, 33, they got their last one in 2012, the finals in Brasov was the third lost since then.
The 24th leg of Romania’s Football Superleague has brought serious defeats to the first two sides in the ranking. Universitatea Craiova came a-cropper 4-1 to Farul in Ovidiu, on the Romanian Black Sea coast on Sunday, while Rapid Bucharest had lost 2-0 their home match against Universitatea Cluj. On Friday, CFR secured a 4-2 win against Metaloglobus, then in Bucharest, Dinamo drew their match one-all to Petrolul Ploieşti. On Saturday Hermannstadt defeated Unirea Slobozia 4-2, and UTA Arad secured a one-nil win against FC Argeş. On Sunday, FCSB obtained their first win this year 1-0, at home against Csikszereda. In the leg’s last match on Monday: FC Botoşani takes on Oţelul Galaţi. Craiova, tops the table with 46 points followed by Dinamo and Rapid, each with 45, but different goal-average.
