The weekend just gone was packed with sporting events, many ending with positive results for Romanians.

Sorana Cîrstea has won the Transylvania Open tennis tournament in Cluj, a WTA 250 event with a prize pot of 283,000 dollars. The Romanian player defeated Britain’s Emma Raducanu in Saturday’s final, score 6-0, 6-2. This marks the fourth WTA title for Sorana, who will receive 37,390 dollars and 250 WTA points for her victory.

 

Moving to table tennis, Bernadette Szőcs has finished as runner-up in the Europa Top 16 tournament held in Montreux, Switzerland. The Romanian athlete was defeated in the final by Germany’s Sabine Winter, three sets to zero. Szőcs previously won the competition in 2018 and was also a finalist in 2019.

 

In the Women’s Handball Champions League, Group B, CSM Bucharest secured a 40-34 home win on Sunday against the French team Brest Bretagne. With two rounds left in the group stage, CSM currently sits in 4th place with 16 points, just two points behind the top two teams, Brest Bretagne and Ferencvaros Budapest. In Group A on Saturday, the other French side in the league, Metz, defeated Gloria Bistrița 29-26 at home. The team from Transylvania is in 4th place with 12 points. The top two teams from each group will advance directly to the quarter-finals. Teams placed 3rd to 6th will play in knockout matches for a spot in the last eight, while the teams in 7th and 8th place are eliminated from the competition.

 

In the EHF European League, Minaur Baia Mare continues its strong run. The team from Maramureș leads Group A after a 28-24 home win on Saturday against Germany’s Thüringer. In Group C, Rapid Bucharest also faced a German side, meeting Oldenburg away and securing a 34-23 victory to move to the top of the standings. In Group D, Corona Braşov suffered a 34-28 home defeat to Denmark’s Viborg and currently holds 3rd place. Two rounds remain in the group stage, after which the top two teams from each group will progress to the quarter-finals.

 

The Romanian rugby team started its 2026 Rugby European Championship campaign with a defeat. The ‘Oaks’ were beaten 30-24 by Germany in Heidelberg on Sunday.

 

At the close of the past weekend, the Milan – Cortina Winter Olympic Games commenced. The first Romanian athletes competed on Saturday and Sunday, though their results were modest. The best performance came from veteran Valentin Creţu, who finished 15th in the men’s singles luge on Sunday. Creţu is making his fifth appearance at the Winter Olympics.

 

In the Romanian Football SuperLiga, weekend fixtures for the 26th round took place. On Friday, FC Argeş defeated Hermannstadt 3-1 in Mioveni, while in Bucharest, Rapid drew 1-1 with Petrolul Ploiești. On Saturday, in Slobozia, Unirea beat Farul Constanţa 2-1; then, in Miercurea Ciuc, Csikszereda won 2-0 against UTA Arad, followed by CFR Cluj’s 3-2 victory in the local derby against Universitatea Cluj. On Sunday, FC Botoşani claimed a 3-0 home win over Metaloglobus, and FCSB defeated Oţelul Galați 4-1. Monday will see the round’s final match: Dinamo Bucharest versus the league leaders, Universitatea Craiova. (VP)
