Romania has got its first medal in a table tennis world championship this century

Romania’s female table tennis side has walked away with bronze from the World Table Tennis Championships in London. On Saturday, our players were stopped in their tracks by China, which secured a 3-0 win in the semifinals. Bernadette Szocs, Elizabeta Samara and Andreea Dragoman have brought Romania the first medal in the teams contest this century. The last time our girls stepped onto the podium was in Kuala Lumpur in 2000, when they also got bronze.
Romania ranks third in a world medal ranking, with five gold, four silver and five bronze medals after China and Japan. Romania’s players got their best performances back in the 50s.
Gloria Bistrița won Romania’s Cup in women’s handball. In the finals held in Baia Mare on Sunday, Gloria secured a 31 – 21 win against SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea. Gloria’s best scorer was Sonia Serafinceanu with seven goals. In the match for the third position, SCM „U” Craiova got a 38 – 27 win against Minaur Baia Mare.
Now, let’s have a look at the latest from football. Romanian striker, Louis Munteanu, has scored for his club, DC United, in the north-American professional league, Major League Soccer. The side from Washington drew their game with Nashville 2-all. Munteanu opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a header on a cross by the Swiss Silvan Hefti. Four minutes later, Lucas Bartlett added a second for the visitors. In the match’s last quarter, Costa Rican Warren Madrigal scored twice for the Tennessee side. Munteanu, who played for 84 minutes, has so far scored 4 goals in 8 matches.

In the play-off section, where sides are fighting for the championship title, the side in the first position, Universitatea Craiova on Friday drew their away match, nil-all, against CFR Cluj. On Saturday, Universitatea Cluj clinched a 1-0, home win against Rapid Bucharest and are now one point away from Craiova. On Sunday in Bucharest, local side Dinamo obtained a 2-1 win against FC Argeș.
In the play-out section, where football sides are fighting to avoid demotion, UTA obtained a 1-0 home win against Csikszereda. On Saturday in Galați, Oțelul outperformed Farul Constanța 3-2, while on Sunday, FC Botoșani drew their match one-all against Petrolul Ploiești. The last matches of the last but one play-out leg are pitching on Monday Metaloglobus against Hermannstadt and FCSB against Unirea Slobozia. Metaloglobus has already demoted to the second football league. With the same number of points, 21, Unirea Slobozia and Hermannstadt are fighting to avoid demotion. Also at the bottom of the table, Petrolul and Farul are also sharing the same number of points, 25.
