Romania romped home at the European Rowing Championships held in Varese, Italy last weekend. Athletes from Romania came first in the countries ranking with six gold medals, one silver and one bronze.  They were followed by their counterparts from Germany and Britain, who won five gold medals. In the women’s double sculls race on Saturday, Simona Radiș and Adriana Adam set a new European record. They were followed by the crews of Czechia and Italy. The Romanians Ștefan Constantin Berariu and Florin Sorin Lehaci came first in the men’s double sculls race, with Lithuania as a runner-up and Italy in the third place. A Romanian four made up of Cosmin Iulian Pleșescu, Leontin Nuțescu, Andrei Vatamaniuc and Ciprian Tudosă became silver medalist in a race won by Great Britain. The Romanian women’s quadruple scull made up of Mariana-Laura Dumitru, Emanuela-Ioana Ciotău, Andrada-Maria Moroșanu and Iulia-Liliana Bălăucă, became bronze medalist in a race won by Switzerland with Germany in the second place.

Sunday saw another four Romanian wins. Our men’s eight ended the race in the first position, which is also a first for a European Rowing Championship. Our rowers were followed by Germany and Italy. In the women’s competition, Romania’s eight ended the race over five seconds ahead Britain, with Italy in the third position. Marian Florian Enache and Iulia-Liliana Bălăucă became gold medalists in the mixed double sculls race, which ended with Germany in the second position and Italy in the third. The day’s last race was the mixed eight, also won by Romania, which ended the race five seconds ahead the runner-up Germany and ten ahead the third-placed Danish crew.

Last weekend saw the games of the third leg of Romania’s Superleague. On Friday, FC Arges, on their own turf, secured a 1-0 win against Csikszreda, while in Galați, local side, Oțelul, ended in a draw, one-all their game against Dinamo Bucharest. On Saturday, FC Voluntari clinched a 1-0 home win against UTA, while Petrolul Ploiesti came a cropper at Universitatea Craiova, 4-0. Corvinul Hunedoara ended in a one-all draw their match against Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe, while in Bucharest, local side, Rapid, obtained a 3-1 win against CFR Cluj. Monday will see two matches  Universitatea Cluj versus FC Botoșani and FCSB versus Farul Constanța.
