The Romanian-Hungarian matchup in the women’s handball Champions League this weekend ended in favour of the Hungarian teams. Although they did not play poorly, CSM Bucharest and Gloria Bistrița left the court defeated. Still, they remain in the upper tier of their respective group standings.
CSM played away from home at Érd, near Budapest, against Ferencváros. The Tigresses lost 23-24, with a goal scored by the Hungarians just 8 seconds before the final whistle. The hosts’ best player was the Danish goalkeeper Anna Kristensen, whose performance made the difference. CSM’s top scorer was also a Dane, Emma Friis, who netted 7 times. For the Romanian runners-up, this was the second defeat in the League, after a start to the competition with two victories. Currently, the Bucharest-based team sits in 4th place and will play its next match at home on October 11 against the Danish side Team Esbjerg.
Gloria Bistrița also saw 2 wins and 2 losses in Group B. On Saturday, the Transylvanian team lost 36–32 in Győr, in a match entirely dominated by the hosts. However, the Romanian champions did have moments where they rose to the level of their opponents. They scored 32 goals against them, even though their opponents had not conceded more than 25 goals per match in this Champions League season. The Austrian player Johanna Reichert stood out for Bistrița, scoring 14 times. Gloria ranks 3rd in the group and will play its next match away as well, facing the Danish side Nykøbing Falster on Sunday, October 11.
Also in women’s handball, we move to the second-tier continental competition, the EHF European League. On Saturday, SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea took a significant step toward the competition’s third qualifying round by defeating the German team TUSSIES Metzingen 39–24 at home in the first leg of the second qualifying round. The Romanian team’s top scorers were the Dane Amalie Wulff Nielsen and the Dutch player Zoe Sprengers, with 6 goals each. Corona Brașov also played at home, beating Red Star Belgrade 32–25. The Russian player Ksenia Makeeva was the hosts’ top scorer with 6 goals. The return legs take place next weekend. It is also worth noting that another Romanian team, Dunărea Brăila, will enter the EHF European League straight in the 3rd qualifying round.
On Sunday, the Romanian ice hockey championship derby took place, a match which also counted towards the regional Erste Liga competition. In Brașov, Corona defeated Gheorgheni 3–1 and leads the standings in both competitions. (AMP)
