Romania’s rugby team on Saturday
lost to Georgia in Tbilisi 41-13 in the first round of the 2020 Rugby Europe
Championship. The points for the Oaks were scored by Florin Vlaicu, from two
penalty kicks, one try and one conversion. In the other fixtures, Spain
defeated Russia 31-12 and Portugal grabbed a 23-17 home win over Belgium. In
the next round Romania will play Portugal on February 8.


In women’s handball, both teams
performing in Sunday’s Champions League matches grabbed wins. In Group 1, CSM
Bucharest won 32-27 against Metz of France at home. Cristina Neagu scored a
total of 14 goals. CSM is ranked 5th in the group tables with 5
points, the same as Vipers Kristiansand of Norway, which it will take on next
Saturday. In Group 2, SCM Ramnicu Valcea won 23-17 against Savehof of Sweden
and is ranked 4th with 4 points. On Saturday, the Romanian champions
will take on ETO Gyor of Hungary, the team currently in top position. We recall
the top 4 teams in each group will advance to the quarterfinals. In the EHF
Cup, Gloria Bistrita-Nasaud won 26-20 against MKS Lublin of Poland, and is now
2nd-placed in Group C with 6 points. Ranking first is Odense of
Denmark with 8 points. In Group B, Magura Cisnadie reported a new defeat,
losing 29-31 to Podravka Koprivnica of Croatia at home, and is now bottom of
the tables with zero points.

This weekend saw matches counting towards the 23rd round of the
Romanian domestic championship. On Friday, Universitatea Craiova won 3-1
against Gaz Metan Medias. On Saturday, FC Voluntari won 2-1 against Academica
Clinceni. In Sibiu, FC Hermannstadt drew 2-all against Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe.
Dinamo won 2-nil against Astra Giurgiu in Bucharest. On Sunday, in Ploiesti, FC
Botosani won 1-nil against Chindia Targoviste. In the round’s highlight match,
CFR Cluj won 1-nil against FCSB. On Monday, Politehnica Iasi will play Viitorul
Constanta. CFR Cluj tops the league tables with 47 points, followed by
Universitatea Craiova and Astra Giurgiu, with 40 points each.
