The third Grand Slam tennis tournament of 2025 and the only one to be held on grass is taking place on the courts of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon these days. In the women’s doubles, on Wednesday, the Romanian-Ukrainian pair Gabriela Ruse / Marta Kostiuk qualified for the second round. In the first round, the two athletes eliminated the pair made up of Latvian Anastasija Sevastova and Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, whom they defeated 6-4, 6-4. Sorana Cîrstea also advances in the women’s doubles, together with Ana Kalinskaia. The Romanian-Russian pair defeated the pair made up of the Italian Angelica Moratelli and the American Sabrina Santamaria in the first round, 6-2, 6-3.
The Romanian football teams are wrapping up their summer preparations these days. On Wednesday, Dinamo Bucharest ended their training in Poland in a 2-2 draw in a friendly match against the Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia. On Tuesday, in the Netherlands, FCSB defeated FC Utrecht 3-1, a team that finished fourth in the Dutch first division. Earlier, on Monday, in Austria, CFR Cluj defeated the Hungarian team Debrecen 2-0 in their last training game. On Saturday, in Bucharest, the Cluj team will play for the Romanian Super Cup against FCSB, the defending champion, at the Steaua Stadium.
A new edition of the Sibiu Cycling Tour is taking place in central Romania at the end of this week. The competition brings together 24 teams from Romania and abroad at the start. The four stages of the race and related events take place on routes in Sibiu County. Cyclists also ride on the streets of the historic center of Sibiu, where the individual time trial is scheduled.
The great boxing champion Mihai Leu will be buried on Friday in Hunedoara, his hometown. The former athlete, the first Romanian world champion in professional boxing, passed away on Tuesday in Bucharest at the age of 57, after a long illness. In 1997, under the name Michael Löwe, he won the world welterweight belt, WBO version, defeating Santiago Samaniego of Panama on points. He lost the title a year later, due to an injury that forced him to give up boxing, but he remained undefeated in his professional career. He switched to motor racing, and in 2003 he won the Romanian Rally Championship. (LS)
