The World Wrestling Championships continue in Zagreb, Croatia. Romania has so far obtained one medal, through Andreea Ana, who won bronze in the 55 kilogram category. In the decisive match, the Romanian defeated the Cuban Yaynelis Sanz Verdecia. The competition will end on Sunday. Before the departure of the 10 Romanian wrestlers to Croatia’s capital, the president of the Bucharest Wrestling Federation, Răzvan Pîrcălabu, declared that Romania’s goal at the World Championships is to win a medal. Goal achieved!
At the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Romania has not yet won a medal. Moreover, no Romanian athlete has managed to qualify for any final. Alin Firfirică, an athlete who will compete in the discus throw event on Saturday, still has a chance.
There is no good news from the Men’s Volleyball World Championships in the Philippines either. The Romanian team lost all three games played in Group B: 0 to 3 against Poland and the Netherlands and 1 to 3 against the team from the Emirate of Qatar. This ended the first participation of the Romanian men’s team in a world championship after an absence of 43 years. We remind you that, decades ago, the Romanians represented a force in volleyball, even winning an Olympic bronze medal in Moscow, in 1980. At the clubs level, Dinamo Bucharest, the champion of Romania, won the European Champions Cup in 1966, ’67 and ’81.
Dinamo Club is represented in European competitions this year by the men’s handball team, but the first games in the Champions League have not brought any points. On Wednesday, the Romanian champion was defeated away from home in Trondheim by the Norwegian team Kolstad Handball, score 31-28. A week ago, at their debut in the current edition of the League, Group A, Dinamo lost the game played at home against Sporting Lisbon, score 30 to 33. The next match will take place in Bucharest, on September 24, at home, against the Hungarian team Veszprém.
We end with football. Internazionale Milano, the team coached by the Romanian coach Cristian Chivu, debuted with a victory in the Champions League. The team from Milan defeated Ajax Amsterdam 2-0 in the away match. In the second round of the League, in two weeks, Inter will play, at home, with the Czech team Slavia Prague. (LS)
