Romanian athlete Constantin Popovici ranked second in the High Jump World Cup, held on Sunday in Porto Flavia, Italy. The competition was won by American James Lichtenstein, the reigning world champion, with 411.30 points, followed by Popovici, the world champion in 2023, with 406.20 points. The ranking was completed by Spaniard Carlos Gimeno, this year’s world vice-champion, with 399.75 points. The other Romanian in the competition, Cătălin Preda, ranked sixth, with 348.70 points.

 

The US Open  has entered its second week. The last Romanian representative on the women’s singles draw, Jaqueline Cristian, was eliminated on Sunday. She was defeated in the third round by American player Amanda Anisimova, world number 9, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. For Jaqueline, a 27-year-old athlete ranked 50th in the world rankings, qualifying for the third round was a first in the history of her participation in the US Open. This year, her performance brought her $237,000 and 130 WTA points.

 

Last weekend, matches took place in the Romanian Super League football championship. On Friday, Rapid won in Bucharest against UTA Arad, with a score of 2-nil. On Saturday, in Clinceni, Universitatea Cluj beat Unirea Slobozia 1-nil, then, in Bucharest, on the National Arena, Dinamo defeated Hermannstadt 2-nil. On Sunday, FC Argeş won the match with Metaloglobus Bucureşti, played in Mioveni, 2-1. Then, FC Botoşani ended the match played at home with Universitatea Craiova in a draw, 1 – 1. Finally, the derby of the stage, held in Cluj between CFR and FCSB, ended in a draw, 2- 2. On Monday, the last two matches of the stage: Csikszereda with Oţelul Galaţi and Farul Constanţa with Petrolul Ploieşti. Craiova leads the standings, with 20 points. Rapid follows, with 18. Both teams at the top of the Super League hierarchy are undefeated. (EE)
