In
light of UEFA’s decision to postpone the 2020 European Football Championship, construction
works for the three stadiums in Bucharest involved in the competition, as well
as for the necessary road infrastructure, are bound to continue, the Minister
of Youth and Sports, Ionut Stroe, has said. Romania will be hosting four
matches as part of EURO 2020, all on National Arena Stadium in Bucharest, while
the Steaua, Rapid and Arcul de Triumf stadiums will serve as training grounds
for the teams that will compete in Bucharest. The aforementioned stadiums are
currently undergoing reconstruction works. The fact that EURO 2020 is
postponed doesn’t mean we will stop doing what we have to do. These are
investments with a long-term impact, which are necessary for Romania. These are
public investments that support the economy, especially in times like these. As
regards the activity carried out at the construction sites for the Steaua,
Rapid and Arcul de Triumf stadiums, this will continue while observing all
occupational health standards, which will be adapted to reflect the latest
developments, Minister Stroe went on to say.


The
2020 European Championship, originally scheduled for June 12 – July 12, 2020,
has been postponed for June 11 – July 11, 2021, due to the coronavirus
pandemic. Bucharest will host three matches in Group C and one in the round of
16. If it manages to qualify, Romania’s national team will play at least two matches
in Bucharest. Romania will go up against Iceland in Reykjavik in the playoffs
for the European Championship. If it emerges victorious, Romania would next
take on the winner of the match pitting Bulgaria against Hungary.
