This weekend will see the start of
the 2022 international rugby season. Romania’s national team will take on
Russia in Bucharest on Saturday in a match counting towards Rugby Europe
Championship, in the second tier of the competition. The match also counts
towards qualification to the 2023 World Cup. At the end of the year, following
the results of 2021 and 2022, the top two teams in the Championship will
advance to the World Cup, while the team in third position will performing in
the playoffs. The team in first position will be drawn in Group C, alongside
Wales, Australia and Fiji and the team winning the playoffs. The team in second
place will be drawn in Group B alongside South Africa, Ireland, Scotland and
the winning team of the Asia/Pacific playoffs.



In news from handball, this weekend
will see matches counting towards European inter-club competitions. In
Champions League, CSM Bucharest on Sunday will play Podravka Koprivnica of
Croatia at home. CSM is ranked 5th in Group A, whereas Podravka is
ranked 8th. In the European League, in Group D, SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea
will take on Chambray Touraine of France at home on Saturday. SCM is top of the
tables in Group D, with 4 points in two games. In Group C, Măgura Cisnădie will
play Storhamar of Norway away from home. Măgura Cisnădie ranks second in the standings,
with four points in three matches. Finally, on Sunday, Minaur Baia Mare will
take on Les Neptunes de Nantes of France at home. Minaur ranks 3rd
in Group B with two points, one win and two losses.



This weekend will also see matches in
the domestic football championship. On Friday, CS Mioveni will play FC Voluntari,
while Gaz Metan Mediaş will go up against Rapid Bucharest. On Saturday, UTA
Arad is playing Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe at home, Farul Constanţa will play
Chindia Târgovişte, whereas in Craiova, Universitatea will play CFR Cluj. On
Sunday, in Piteşti, FC Argeş will take on Academica Clinceni, whereas in
Bucharest, the local side FCSB will play FCU Craiova. On Monday, FC Botoşani
will play Dinamo Bucharest. CFR tops the league tables with 59 points, followed
by FCSB with 51 points. (VP)
