The Romanian football team has qualified to the semifinals of the U19 European Football Championship, a competition hosted by Romania. Our young footballers achieved a premiere in the history of Romania’s participation in U19 football competitions. On Thursday, the team coached by Ion Marin defeated Denmark 3-0 in Bucharest and secured 2nd place in Group A. The goals for Romania were scored by Remus Guțea, David Barbu and Ioan Vermeșan. Romania was forced to win to qualify for the semifinals, while the Danes only needed a draw. Spain won the group with 9 points, followed by Romania with 6 points, Denmark with 3 points and Montenegro with no points. On Monday, in the semifinals, Romania will take on the Netherlands.
At the European Kayaking and Canoeing Championships hosted by Czechia in Račice, Romanian athletes secured their presence in three finals on Thursday. In the single canoe event, Cătălin Chirilă won the first heat in the 1,000 meter race with the best time in both heats. The final will take place on Saturday. The Romanian athlete is the defending world champion in this event. In the 500 meter race, Chirilă ranked second in the second heat. The final will take place on Sunday. The double canoe crew also qualified for the final, in the 500 meter race. The crew members, Ilie Sprîncean and Oleg Nuță, will compete for a medal on Sunday.
In the European Golden League men’s volleyball competition, in Kutna Gora, Czechia, Romania on Thursday lost to the host country’s team, 3-2. The Romanian volleyballers lost the first place match, after four consecutive victories. In another fixture on Thursday, Greece defeated Finland, 3-1. The Greek team is in first place in the standings, with 5 wins, followed by Romania, Finland and Israel, with 4 wins each. On Friday, also in Kutna Gora, Romania will go up against Portugal. The first three ranked teams will qualify to the final tournament, which will take place in Brno, on July 5-6, where the Czech team is qualified as the host country.
