CFR Cluj football team qualified, on Thursday, for the second preliminary round of the Europa League. The vice-champion and holder of the Romanian Cup, the Transylvanian team won, at home, score 3-0, against the Hungarian team Paks, the winner of the Hungarian Cup. In the first match, the score was tied, 0-0. In the next round, the students of coach Dan Petrescu will meet the Swiss team Lugano.
This weekend, matches are scheduled for the second stage of the first football echelon of Romania. Only three of the 16 Super League teams are coming off victories in the first stage, and at least one of them will not be able to boast passing the second stage with maximum points. The three teams that won in the first stage are Rapid Bucharest and the Cluj teams CFR and Universitatea. However, on Sunday, in the first derby of the championship, CFR plays Rapid in Bucharest, so only one of the two teams could collect six points.
Let’s now look at the match schedule to see the days of the matches. On Friday, Hermannstadt takes on Metaloglobus and Universitatea Craiova plays FC Argeş. The first game of Saturday will take place in Cluj, between Universitatea and UTA, two teams with big ambitions for this season. With a win and a draw in the confrontation between Rapid and CFR, Universitatea Cluj can break away at the top of the standings. Then, in Ploieşti, FCSB will meet Petrolul. After the unconvincing performances in the first games of the season, FCSB supporters are looking forward to the match at the Prahova team’s stadium with great expectations.
On Sunday, before the derby at Giuleşti Stadium, Farul Constanţa will face Oţelul Galaţi in Ovidiu. Both teams come after draws in the first round. Monday will see the last two matches of the second round. Unirea Slobozia meets Csikszereda at home in Clinceni for the first time in the Super League. The two teams have faced each other for several years in the second league, from which Slobozia promoted in 2024, and Csikszereda this year. The round ends in Bucharest, at the Arcul de Triumf Stadium, with the match between Dinamo and FC Botoşani, two other teams that come after draws in the first round. (LS)
